Why Do Security Cameras Keep Working During a Power Failure?

Security cameras that keep operating during a power failure do so because of their backup-power infrastructure, rather than a special feature of the cameras themselves.

Why do security cameras keep working during a power failure?

When security cameras keep operating after a power failure, the reason is the backup system behind them. Recording can continue if cameras, recorders, PoE switches and network devices are supplied by a suitable UPS or DC backup system. Without backup, much of the system stops when electricity fails. UPS, battery and DC systems have been part of EKA System’s work for many years, and security installations provide an everyday example of why critical loads need continuous power.

A camera alone is not enough

A camera producing an image does not mean the entire security system is working. IP installations also need power for PoE switches, network equipment, recording servers or NVRs and sometimes central controllers. One device shutting down can prevent recording or interrupt transmission to a security centre even if the camera remains on. Backup planning therefore considers the entire system load.

What does a UPS provide?

A UPS continues to supply connected devices from batteries when mains power fails. It can keep the system operating through short interruptions and bridge generator startup where a generator is available. Larger facilities may supply security, communications, controls and automation through different architectures. Some use AC UPS systems, while certain control and communications equipment uses DC supplies and batteries.

How is battery autonomy determined?

There is no single correct runtime. Required autonomy follows total load, system criticality, generator availability and the operating scenario. A facility needing only a few minutes of transfer time will not require the same battery capacity as one wanting hours of recording during an outage. Selection must consider actual load, voltage, required runtime and battery operating conditions, rather than Ah capacity alone. Continuous security-camera operation is ultimately the result of correctly designed critical-power infrastructure.
